Magda Szubanski labelled a "hypocrite" after blackface photos emerge

Magda Szubanski has been called out for being a "hypocrite" online after photos of her doing blackface in a comedy sketch have resurfaced.

The comedian had taken to Twitter to express her annoyance at Gina Rinehart for failing to condemn the racist comments made by her father, after Hancock Prospecting, run by Rinehart, withdrew its multimillion-dollar sponsorship for the Australian Diamonds netball team.

She said, "Lang Hancock went way beyond plain racism he suggested STERILIZING a race of people. So it's not virtue signalling - it's survival! Imagine being asked to wear his name on your back just so you can get funding for your sport."

One Twitter user took issue with her comments, and shared a photo of Magda performing in a comedy skit in blackface.

In the image, Magda is seen wearing a pink tunic and an afro wig adorned with hair clips, with dark brown paint covering her face.

Twitter users were quick to label Magda a "hypocrite", saying she had no right to weigh in on the matter following her own racist mistakes in the past.

"Magda you might need to sit this one out," wrote one commenter.

"But I think you are failing to recognise that Gina didn't make those comments, you personally wore blackface," wrote a second, before another added, "Not a good look".

Following the onslaught, Magda herself re-shared the photo, saying, "I've spent the 25 years since then listening and learning. And apologising."

Some fans accepted her apology, with one person writing, "The world has changed, we have all learnt more since then. Glass houses people, no one lives a perfect existence without anything cringeworthy in your past."

Image credits: Getty Images / Twitter

Magda Szubanski calls for "fat" people to be protected from online hate speech

Magda Szubanski has called for vilification rules to be put in place for "fat people" online, only to be blasted by her following.

The comedian shared the controversial tweet in which she wondered why "fat" people are not "protected" from hate speech online.

She wrote, "It's interesting to me that you are banned from attacking just about every identity on Twitter except being fat. Sounds like your blood sugar is low," and "Lose some weight then."

Despite receiving plenty of support from fans, the controversial tweet saw more personal attacks.

"Ever see any obese old people? No, because they all die young. If you are going to do that to yourself, then you will have to accept noticing," another wrote.

"Because you choose to be fat," yet another wrote.

Magda was only too happy to call out the backlash, as she accused the online users of dumping their "toxic self-loathing" onto her, as they believe she "wouldn't fight back".

"It's pretty clear from the response to my tweet that some people hate fat people because their own hearts are so full of hate that they need to dump all their toxic self-loathing onto someone who they think won't fight back."

"Well, not this little fat duck. She got teeth," she wrote.

She also went on to say that the online trolls proved her point entirely as many commenters defended her, saying it would go a long way if we were all a little nicer to each other online.

"This is how it's done": Big names speak out against Manly pride jersey boycott

Magda Szubanski and Jesinta Franklin have led the charge of celebrity voices condemning the Manly Sea Eagles and the players boycotting the pride jersey for a charity match.

Jesinta, wife of AFL star Buddy Franklin, weighed in on the saga as she shared a photo of her husband wearing the Sydney Swans jersey in a match against St Kilda last month.

She simply wrote, "This is how it's done," followed by a string of rainbow hearts.

The image Jesinta shared showed the AFL players in their pride jerseys, along with the words "Everyone is welcome at the footy!" written over the rainbow pride flag.

Magda Szubanski also spoke out over the controversy in a series of scathing tweets, questioning the foundation of the players religious beliefs that saw them boycott the jerseys in the first place.

She declared the seven Sea Eagles players in question, who are boycotting their team’s Thursday night clash with the Roosters, were failing to show the tolerance demanded by their religion by refusing to wear a LGBTQI+ themed jersey.

“Thought experiment: imagine if Manly players were asked to wear stripes to let religious players & fans know they are welcome,” she began.

“Then imagine an atheist player refuses to wear the stripes coz their “belief” (based on fact) is that millions have been killed in the name of religion."

“Religious tolerance doesn’t mean you condone or believe in the other’s religion. It means that you accept the right of difference to exist. That you support a world where people are not excluded or persecuted because of their religion. All we ask, is for the same courtesy."

“You can’t force people to believe that homosexuality is not sinful."

“But you can ask them to help make a tolerant society that accepts difference. Including their own.”

Szubanski later posted bible verses which highlighted directions to show love and hospitality to “strangers” which further amplified her point of acceptable and tolerance.

The series of tweets have racked up hundreds of likes, with many sharing how they could not understand why the Manly players were willing to sabotage their team's chance at securing a spot in the NRL finals over something as frivolous as a rainbow stripe.

Image credits: Getty Images / Instagram

Kath & Kim to return for 20th anniversary reboot

It’s time to crack open the Tia Maria and whack on the footy franks because the foxy ladies of Fountain Lakes are back!

The cast of Aussie TV show Kath & Kim have once again joined forces to record a special project for the show’s 20th anniversary.

Creators Gina Riley and Jane Turner along with stars Magda Szubanski, Glenn Robbins and Peter Rowsthorn arrived at the NEP Studios in South Melbourne for filming.

The special one-off is expected to see the famous characters of Kath Day-Knight (Turner), her daughter Kimberly Day Craig (Riley), Kath’s butcher husband Kel (Robbins) and Kim’s husband Brett (Rowsthorn), and second-best friend Sharon Strzelecki (Szubanski) return.

And of course, Kath & Kim’s Brighton alter egos, Prue and Trude will make an appearance.

The reboot is expected to air later in the year with ABC, Seven and Netflix strong contenders for the broadcast.

The first episode of Kath & Kim aired in May 2002 which then saw a legion of fans follow the foxy ladies.

Fans were recently in uproar after the home used in the show, dubbed “Chateau Kath" was demolished after the owner wanted to create a bigger home for her family.

Pete Rowsthorn, who played Brett in the series, said the house contained a lot of memories but it's time to move on.

“It was a weird house, if I bought it I'd probably pull it down too," he previously said.

"It had really quite small rooms … the squeaky back door, that was all natural sound. There was no foley man putting that on top.

"I played cricket in the backyard with Shane Warne, I danced in the garage with Kylie Minogue, I sat and had dinner with Barry Humphries dressed up as a monk.”

Image: Facebook

Is Kath and Kim making a comeback?

Magda Szubanski is keeping tight-lipped on whether or not there will be a reboot of our favourite foxy ladies, Kath and Kim.

The actress, who played Kim’s second best friend Sharon Strzelecki, was asked about whether the rumours could be true.

"If I did I couldn't possibly tell you. If I did, I'd have to kill you and your publishers and everyone else," she told TV Week.

"It would be a bloodbath!"

She was also asked by the publication about whether she will come back as the beloved Sharon Strezelecki.

"Again, I can neither confirm or deny!" she replied.

Back in 2018, Magda mentioned the attention the show was getting years after it ended after Netflix picked it up.

However, Jane Turner who played Kath, said the show would have to be completely modernised to be in tune with today’s lifestyle.

"It would be very different now. There are always funny new trends and things Kath and Kim could put their spin on, which would be fun to do," she previously said.

Then in May 2021 she said she wasn’t exactly “too keen” on creating a fifth season of the show.

"I think it should be off the table... It holds such a special place in people's memories," she told The Kyle and Jackie O Show.

"If we did a live show, which was a "best of" or something like that, that's different. But to actually try and do a whole new series, I think you can never capture that magic again."

Image: Facebook

Viewers react to Magda Szubanski as host of the Weakest Link

The great Cornelia Frances was the original host of the Weakest Link, who won the hearts of viewers with her blunt delivery and firecracker personality.

So when comedian Magda Szubanski was announced as the quizmaster of the latest reboot, many weren't convinced.

You see, Frances fit the bill as she's mainly played villains throughout her career, but Magda was the complete opposite.

Sydney Morning Herald's Andrew Hornery said the decision to hire Magda was "surely a mix up".

“For millions of Australians, myself included, Magda Szubanski is anything but a bitch,” he so succinctly put it.

Magda did give us some indication of what to expect when she told Nine that the show has “a larrikin Australian” vibe to it.

“You’ll see hints of my old characters, more banter with the contestants. It’s more fun.

“I believe in evolving traditions, and it’s not your mum and dad’s Weakest Link at all.

“There’s actually a lot at stake,” she said of the competition. But it seems there’s a lot at stake for this new iteration.

So after the show's debut, how did Magda rate?

Well, 423,000 viewers tuned in across the five metro capitals - not a total disaster, but hardly a runaway hit.

As for the show, it felt like an odd mix of trying to be what it was and trying to move on.

Magda is no Cornelia.

She got some laughs. We scored a glimpse of a former character, the iconic Lynne (“I said pet”). She tried the nasty vibe. But did it work? You can’t help but love Magda but is it enough to sustain the show for such an iconic role?

As the Weakest Link trended across social overnight, critics weren’t so sure.

“She just shouldn’t have done the stern character. If she did it as herself it could have worked,” TV insider Rob McKnight said.

“I think I’m done.”

Speaking to Media Week, Magda said that she “has no desire to be another Cornelia” and deliberately didn’t watch the Australian version. She drew instead from Jane Lynch, host of the American version of the series.

“Jane Lynch did a very different thing and that was what encouraged me to do it,” she said.

“When the producers first approached me, they sent me an episode of Jane Lynch doing it and I went, ‘ah, now that I get.’

“So, it’s not brutal like some of the earlier iterations of the show, and it is its own beast, which is appropriate. It’s playful as well as stern, you know?

“And the contestants are up for it. It’s hilarious. They want me to roast them, and I’m like ‘alright!!!’.”

She told A Current Affair that “the world’s just a different place you know, so, it’s stern but it’s not quite as brutal as the English one.”

Magda Szubanski slams nurse for tweeting about her hospital visit

Magda Szubanski said she was left feeling “very vulnerable and unsafe” after a person claiming to be a nurse posted online about her recent hospital stay.

The Kath & Kim star, who recently underwent an operation, expressed her outrage after finding a Twitter post from a medical professional who claimed to have looked after her.

“Post-op is an extremely vulnerable time and I think your employers would be very concerned for the privacy of any patients in your “care”,” the 58-year-old wrote in response to the tweet, which has now been deleted.

“I have to say it was quite upsetting to find that in my feed. Made me feel very vulnerable and unsafe.

“I bloody love nurses and medical professionals and am a huge supporter of their rights. I wanted to be a doctor when I was young. Magda Szubanski's question brings man to tears: “I’ll live with the decision I made”

A Canberra man who was close to facing jail time for helping his terminally ill wife take her own life has broken down on TV after he was asked a heartbreaking question from Magda Szubanski.

Neil O’Riordan appeared on The Project last night, only a few short hours after the charges made against him were dropped.

The 63-year-old was arrested earlier in the year and was charged with assisted suicide after he helped his wife of 25 years end her life.

Shane Drumgold, the ACT Director of Public Prosecutions, said forcing Neil to face court would be “unduly harsh and oppressive”, saying he was “motivated wholly by love and compassion”.

His wife Penelope Blume made the tough decision after she was diagnosed with motor neurone disease in 2016 and saw her health getting progressively worse.

She then turned to her husband about ending her life.

Imagine being faced with a terminally ill partner who’d made the decision to end their life. You can’t change their mind, so you decide to help fulfill that wish. Then imagine being dragged through the courts immediately afterwards. This is Neil's heartbreaking story. pic.twitter.com/0r8ku53eDF
— The Project (@theprojecttv) 2 July 2019

“For Penelope, who’d always enjoyed good health, having a body that didn’t work anymore was catastrophic,” Neil told The Project.

By March, Penelope was completely dependant on Neil for everything. It was soon after she made the painstaking decision to say goodbye.

“It’s the bravest thing I’ve ever seen. I’ll live with the decision that I made,” he said.

Neil said he was relieved to not be facing jail time of potentially 10 years but also wishes the ACT accepted euthanasia in the same way as Victoria.

The state legalised voluntary euthanasia two weeks ago.

“I grew up in what used to be a compassionate and caring country, and I guess I’ve become concerned that we display less and less of those characteristics,” said Neil.

“I would hope when it comes to the issue of voluntary assisted dying that we go back to the compassion and caring country that we used to be.”

Neil kept his emotions in check throughout the interview but broke down after Magda Szubanski asked him a sensitive question.

“It must have been an incredibly hard thing to do,” Szubanski said.

“When the final moment came, were you at peace with the decision because you knew that it was what Penelope wanted?”

He laughed slightly before responding: “OK. Theoretically, yes, I was perfectly fine with it,” he said, as his voice began breaking.

“Until it happened. And I was devastated. I wailed. I thought about the unfairness about why couldn’t I be doing this with my family? Why did we have to be covert?”

The couple spent their final night together by going on a date but spoke openly about what was to come.

“We weren’t secretive about it. I’m surrounded by people who love and care about me. People were aware of what was going to happen,” he said.

“I guess the covertness comes from the fact that the way that it had to happen. I would hope there are opportunities in the future for people to perhaps do that with their family more involved for the processes to be less covert.”

Neil then revealed that their final hours spent together was exactly what Penelope wanted.

“She wanted to see the beach again, eat seafood again, difficult to acquire in Canberra, and mostly, I guess, we wanted to spend some time alone together,” he said.

“I was prepared to and fully expected to be charged, and I guess at some level I expected to be convicted, and I’m very grateful that the court made a different decision.”

The heartfelt way Magda Szubanski remembers Heath Ledger

Comedian and LGBT activist Magda Szubanski has posted a heartfelt tribute to her late friend and worldwide famous actor, Heath Ledger.

In the past, Magda has honoured the late Joker actor in emotional posts to social media and she has proven time and time again she is not one to shy away from remembering Heath.

The pair both went viral in 2006 at the AFI Awards when Magda’s Kath & Kim character ‘Sharon Strzelecki’ met Heath Ledger on the red carpet.

She squealed in excitement from seeing the then 27-year-old and, in a moment no one expected, the actor grabbed ‘Sharon’s’ face and in Magda’s own words “pashed ME!”

The actress hilariously fell to the ground in shock and later presented an award alongside Dannii Minogue to Heath, and joked he had given her a “Heath rash.”

Later, in a 2017 post the beloved Australian comedian took to Instagram to give inside details about their special on-air moment.

“Ah beautiful Heath. This is one of my favourite career moments ever. Heath had no idea I was going to do this,” Magda shared, mentioning the Aussie actor at the time was having a “rough” experience with the Australian media and was “nervous” to be appearing on a red carpet.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Magda Szubanski (@magda_szubanski) on Oct 3, 2017 at 10:36pm PDT

“The producers and I planned that, as Sharon, in her role as stage manager for the event, I would surprise Heath with a "Sharon pash". I'd met him a couple of times and he was such a great guy. When the moment came I was so 'in the moment' I naturally did what Sharon would do: I fangirl screamed.

“Heath had NO idea any of this was gonna happen. But being the magical, receptive actor he was, he totally went with the flow and then upped the stakes even further, grabbed Sharon's (my) face and pashed ME!

“Tell ya, he almost turned me.

“Then the next day he rang me and said he'd had so much fun he wanted to be written into @kathandkim as Sharon's stalker. He and I had a chat about it when I was in London. And then he went off to play The Joker. And well...

“Anyway, this is the beautiful, playful, lighter side of The Joker. I'm so honoured I got to share this moment with him. And as my friend Ron just said, had romance blossomed our love child would've been called #Sheath.

“Always in our hearts #heathledger.”

Heath tragically died in an accidental prescription drug overdose in 2008 in New York, at the age of 28.

He shares one daughter, 13-year-old Matilda Ledger, with American actress Michelle Williams.

Magda Szubanski starts counter-campaign to rival Israel Folau: "He is wrong – don't listen to him"

Comedian Magda Szubanski has started a campaign for terminally ill children in a bid to denounce causes that use faith to divide communities.

Two high-profile Christian leaders say that Szubanski has their support.

Father Bob Macguire and Father Rod Bower have pledged their support for the campaign, with Bower changing his parish’s community sign to read:

“LGBT friends: Folau is wrong. Don’t listen to him”, according to The New Daily.

Father Bower said he was supporting the comedian’s cause because Jesus’s practice was one of “radical inclusivity”.

“He even ate with sinners. So, if I’m going to be a Jesus follower, this fundraiser is something I can support,” he said in a statement.

Donors have pledged around $170,000 to the cause, but that’s paltry compared to the $2 million-plus raised so far for Israel Folau.

Szubanski aims to raise $500,000 to help children who are “in the fight of their lives”, using the same phrase that Folau used when describing his fundraiser in his legal fight against Rugby Australia.

Folau’s $4 million contract was terminated in May after he breached the terms and conditions by sharing a social media post warning that “sinners”, including drunks, liars and homosexuals, would go to hell if they didn’t repent.

The Australian Christian Lobby, who has firmly stood by Folau, has started a new campaign on its site after GoFundMe took down the initial fundraiser.

Szubanski’s rival fundraiser will give 90 per cent of donations to the Children’s Cancer Foundation and 10 per cent to Sydney-based LGBTQIA+ supper service Twenty10.

“Our Australian community is diverse, accepting, powerful and generous,” the crowdfunding page reads.

“It’s that spirit for which we should be known, and it’s with those values that we should be donating our time and money.”

Magda Szubanski reveals emotional response to swimsuit photos

Magda Szubanski has tearfully defended her right to wear whatever she likes at the beach on Andrew Denton’s new show Interview on Tuesday.

The 57-year-old actress slammed a series of women’s magazines for publishing images of her in swimwear at the beach in 2011.

The TV icon admitted she was sad when she first saw the photos, but quickly decided: “F**k them! I'm going to go down there with my fat body amongst all the models and just be fat on Bondi Beach.”

She added: “And they can go and get stuffed!

“You know, (they treat you) as if it's a crime to subject people to your fat body on the beach!”

Magda has spoken candidly about her weight and body image.

“I don't feel like a fat person - it was something that happened to me,” she began. “Because I wasn't fat as a kid and I was quite sporty and so (weight) feels like carrying a suit of armour or something.”

She spoke about the time she lost 40kg as ambassador for Jenny Craig, but said she didn't feel “great” like everyone said it would – instead, she felt “odd” and conflicted.

“It does become your second skin. It's something that you're very used to and when I lost all the weight on Jenny Craig, it was quite a weird feeling, actually,” she said.

“People don't think that, they think 'oh, you lose weight and everything's going to be great.'

“And I don't mean to be a whinger about it but there was a candid photo I saw of me (after losing the weight) and I didn't recognise myself.”

Magda explained: “That is a really strange feeling, to look in the mirror and not see yourself, you know?”

“To not have this body felt odd.”

Ah well.”

During the interview with Andrew, Magda also reflects on her contribution to the same-sex marriage campaign in 2017, the success of TV show Kath & Kim and hit movie Babe, plus her father’s experiences as a Polish resistance assassin in World War II.

Why Peter Rowsthorn and Magda Szubanski don’t talk anymore

Kath & Kim might’ve been one of Australia’s most iconic shows, but recent comments from Peter Rowsthorn suggest it might be a while until we see a reboot.

Rowsthorn, who features in the most recent season of I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here!, told TV Week he barely talks to co-star Magda Szubanski, admitting that maintaining friendships in the fickle world of showbusiness can be difficult.

“I sort of just watch Mags like everyone else in the media,” Rowsthorn said.

“We don't really talk - I've found showbiz is a fairly transient sort of game. Some people remain good friends, but it's tricky.”

Rowsthorn has admitted that he stays in touch with Kath & Kim co-star Glen Robbins, who the 55-year-old comedic actor describes as one of his “best mates”.

While Rowsthorn is back in the public eye with his involvement in I’m A Celebrity, he quickly quashed any notion of being part of any Kath & Kim reboot.

“It would be horrible,” Peter said. “It would never be as good as the first one.”

What are your thoughts? Would you like to see another season of Kath And Kim?
